Grown-up hip-hop

SDC's Clone Wars III arrived and maybe a dozen listens in, I’m starting to really discover this album.

A post shared by King Davies (@showdemcamp) on

Yes of course it was nice at first, and there were some instant hits and instant favourites, but it gets even better after you’ve played the hell out of it.
Frank Ocean’s Blonde is like that too, but I haven’t played the hell out of it yet. Anyone listen to Blonde?

To extend the analogy, Channel Orange is Clone Wars II, while Nostalgia, Ultra is Clone Wars Volume One.   #YES! Totally.

The other album Endless is... I don’t know? Small Chops? The Collectiv3 project?  Both Small Chops and The Collective LP?
The Dreamer Project?

And like with Frank Ocean, there is sort of a miscellaneous Show Dem Camp album of unreleased music (which on my laptop is a folder labelled BitsNPieces)

Clone Wars III : The Recession , by SDC (Show Dem Camp) is hip-hop that does that thing fine wine does.  Drink up.

Celebrate in advance

Get to know
The popular Show Dem Camp (SDC):
Feel Alright ft. Poe and Boj

Happy Weekend ft. Kid Konnect

Ewele ft. Ms. Iye

The venerated rap-duo Show Dem Camp - Ghost and Tec:

Clone Wars 2

There's still the collaborator ShowDemCamp:
with Jesse, MI, BlackMagic, The Collectiv3, Falz, many great African women in music...not to mention The Dreamer Project

The Afropolitan ShowDemCamp.

The...

They have more sides than a geometry test :)

Get caught up on their work - really some of it is hard to find because dropped all over the place like goat pearls but if you're like me you'll enjoy the challenge - and get ready for their next project.

I think it's this summer, and I think it's a Clone Wars Volume 3 tape or something?

Now get caught up on OluwaJesseJagz.  I think his next album is this summer too; I just know.  The last one was a surprise and it was super-duper-awesome.  Just, really, a feast, in every way.
Jesse Jagz of the thousand nicknames and fittingly, Gemini, is the greatest: the only artist to appear twice on my top-five music video feature.
No seriously.  Fela - dead.  Bob Marley - murdered.  By this skinny kid from Jos, Nigeria named Jesse Abaga.
Nothing left to prove, in my opinion.
What will he do next?  Maybe go for the sound of cash-registers credit alerts?  Serve us a new story-brand-swag-persona?  Open up our heads and put the truth inside?  Add some honey to his sound and make it so confectionately ours?  I don't know, I don't know.  I do know that I am not setting myself up for a crash to reality because the reality is Jesse is astounding.

AdVertIseMent: Read my books.
The crazy thing is omgggg so much great music and art in Nigeria.  I can't wait for the rest of this experience.
This is one video that didn't move me at first.
So while it's great fun, it's not even his best.

Freshly Vibely

A post shared by King Davies (@showdemcamp) on

I'm a definite homebuddy all day, and week, and season long
but I go out for my SDC - Show Dem Camp and supergood live music.

It's soooo good for the heart.
I end up falling in love with, like, everybody, or at least with how beautiful everybody is, so happy and so kind.  For example, this spectacular lady that wrote a review.  This handsome knight I met at the food place nearby.  The superfans that hugged - all the hugs.

The clips above are from Friday night, there's another mini-show tonight and a big show planned for 29th December - all 'Palm-Wine Music' theme and so supercool.

The Jesse Jagz oeuvre in four home-made albums

Jesse Jagz is one of my favourite musicians in the world.
He is called 'The Greatest' - how those rap monikers stick - and that name works fine, but each of his albums, even the first, makes you want to also crown him 'The Genius' for the beauty, breadth and inventiveness of his sounds.
http://www.360nobs.com/2010/08/jesse-jagz-jag-of-all-tradez-%E2%80%A6naija-listening-e-a-r-essential-album-rating/
a: Jag of All Tradez
My critique is that sometimes the albums are too good, too diverse, and fail to hammer home an overarching theme or round out a specific style.
Trust me to find something wrong with anything.
Indeed, the first album is titled Jag of all Tradez.  It is a platter of multiple, maybe three, newish styles, and the result is wondrous, and it is wonderful when you're doing the long drive or stuck in traffic and you have all these many beats and lyrics and amazements to accompany you, and even if the album is almost five years old, I still say get it now.
But artistically it is a tiny bit much.
Jesse, na too much talent dey worry you :)
b. Jagz Nation Vol 1: Thy Nation Come
My publisher, SS at Kraft Books once told me that it's alright for a first album (well, a first poetry collection) to be more diverse, a little more episodic, more an introduction to the many facets of you, you know?  It was he who suggested I cut my gazillion poems into more than one collection, and that I would understand someday, so we went with about 40% of the initial set for Comrade.
After that, I understood, and produced progressively 'tighter' collections in theme and style, so that following the sort of this is me, this is my struggle, this is us, this is what we love, range of Comrade, and still I really love Comrade :)
the next collection Yalla! is about places and travel, with a friendship section tacked on.
Then Big Girl and Big Boy would be loved by any boy, or any girl, each book being at the intersection of romance and this awkward economic situation of being elite in a land full of poor people.
The latest book, Monsters, is really just about Monsters, i.e. fear and loathing.  Preview Monsters.
Tracklist for Thy Nation Come
Jesse's work too has evolved nicely in this regard.  Even from their titles, you can tell that the next two albums have more definition.
There is 'Thy Nation Come' which is very reggae-and-marijuana-inspired;
followed almost immediately by 'Royal Niger Company' named after the colonial-era trading company that became Nigeria.  He introduced RNC as a gift to the fans (ohmygodd free download, out of the blue) that serves up a little bit of history.
http://notjustok.com/2014/03/28/album-jesse-jagz-jagz-nation-vol-2-royal-niger-company-download/
c. Royal Niger Company
Anyway,  I sliced and diced his three albums and created four collections that offer this enhanced thematic / stylistic coherence that I love.  Here they are.

What the albums are about:
1. The Greatest - Rap is about building yourself up with praise.  Like a good oriki, it makes you feel good-and-confident. Now What's My Name?
2. LOVEU - Baby, I love you, so wind your behind for me.  Holy Album Sales!
3. Thy Nation Come - Jah-consciousness.  I just murdered Bob Marley.
4. Royal Niger Company - The new sound of the tropics.  I just murdered Fela.

Complain in the comments section.
Advertisement: Read my books.  There is an extended, rather traditional, oriki poem in Big Boy, with a name oriki, twin oriki, and town/clan oriki.  Yoruba people have been doing for (centuries?) this swag-a-brag thing that rappers do all day.

One day I will write more about
- oriki (re-mi-do)
- thematic unity (in my lecture series on creativity)

Concert: Chemistry's Mysteries

Lady Jay - Oh My My My

James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream

St. Beauty - Holographic Lover

A side-note on referrals:
I don't always remember the history of how I "discovered" a particular track, album, or artiste, but for the above three I have names and dates: Tec, Ghost, and Janelle Monae - beautiful discoveries yielding beautiful discoveries.

Graffiti update: now a cow moos in my room

Little children had it right all along: crayon BELONGS ON THE WALL.  I did most of this one on Friday under the influence of three rounds of Show Dem Camp's Clone Wars 2 album.
It's like a cow (Taurus chic) in paradise,
there's gold and food and sand and sea,
butterflies and flowers and bamboo/palm
and spiralling curvy things everywhere
Remember the humble beginning?  I told you I was going to frame my mirror, and now I over-framed it.  Don't do drugs, kids.  Do love, do art, do that good music that you love.
:)
As I jammed that day I remembered what Bez had just written about music you could work to:

Getting the photo, with Kunle O's friend Madu C.
One day I'll do a Rufus Wainwright marathon - then what will happen to the walls!

Some secrets about music, because I love you:
good speakers.  i wrote that before.  i don't always follow my own advice.
close your eyes.  throw a cloth over your head if you have to.
stand up , grab some crayons, ... it is madd.
poor speakers.  hear the same thing differently.

Lyrics: REMEMBER ME, by SDC ft. Funbi

SDC, Show Dem Camp, has Ghost and Tec.
Listen (Parental Advisory)

(Intro: TEC recites)
Time-travelling through space and time,
Lovers - she had many -
but in her quiet moments, the
only recurrent face is mine.
I altered not just her state of mind but
her outlook on life.
More than just the pipes,
I'm fixing her reservoirs,
the
taps, once dry,
are now flowing in torrents.
Vanilla skies,
vanilla kush,
flows in a room of clouds,
Thanks Agbalumo, I love the way you put it down.

(Chorus/Hook: FUNBI)
O Baby, you gon' remember me,
tattoo my name in your mind deep inside it.
the way that I'm gonna get you excited,
discovering places never been.

(Chorus, again)

O Baby

(GHOST)
Object of my fantasy,
Yall there's no cover
from this loaded magazine
Sex is my weapon-of-choice
Murder is the case, you're the casualty
when I hit
every atom of your anatomy.
We can take it slow
- drink, smoke, whatever..
I can be a good boy
but you know when I'm bad I'm better.
Oh, you like my voice?
Does it turn you on?
Are your panties moist?
Well,
we can get it on.
Nm, nm, don't trip.
Love the way you play your hard to get
And I see the freak all in your eyes
and that just makes me hard as shit.
Girl your skin is a pool of chocolate
and I'm just dying for a swim
Wanna indulge myself in your sweetness
and have you dripping from my chin
Then
I'ma get my beast on
Shalala kush, ching chong,
Now ride that dee like a seesaw
Giddy up, giddy up, hee haw!
Now it's my turn
Switch positions
Sweat dripping
Bed dripping
from the back shots
now you're moaning
that's your shih
hypnosis.

Go!
(Chorus x2)

(TEC)
Roll a little, toke a little
get the room loud
Calm before a storm -
that's a kush cloud.
Your inhibitions' gone
it's something new now.
No need to rush it,
Omo cool down.
No time to waste
but we need to take our time
Need endurance for the kind a heights I'm
gonna help you climb
'n' I know you heard that song
that goes 'borrow-borrow make me shine'
though it belongs to someone else
tonight you say it's mine.
And if it's just one night,
then Baby we're on borrowed time,
so all your thoughts of making love
I'm gonna redefine.
And it fits like a glove -
that's the way it's been designed.
And I know you like to take control
so I will let you shine
I will let you get on top
I will let you start the climb
Your waist,
your waist,
I will let you start to wind,
I'ma let you speed it up,
then tell you Omo take your time,
and if you like to talk
then let me know what's on your mind.

(Chorus x4)

(Outro)
Getting you on that extra mind blow.

Lyrics: The Case, by Jesse Jagz featuring Show Dem Camp

One of the best rap songs ever, lyrically.
But can't find the lyrics online months after the release.

Your assignment: Dump the full lyrics in the comments section, or just transcribe short sections and I'll assemble them.  Thank you.  Bless you.  Don't make me have to do it all myself ;)

Six months later...the lyrics are here!

Jesse:

1

Uh.
Sent me pretty flowers in April,
came on the wings of the angel (Gabriel)
The hand that rocked my cradle, he prepared the table,
something I could relate to even though I had no cable.
When I am unable, power's been disabled,
can't communicate to my own Tower of Babel,
Gabriel the angel came to my stable,
said chosen of the gods, hail able, we praise you.
See I speak the truth, you might choose to believe in fables.
Do you believe in angels or fake names and labels?
Stay true. Know the path I walk is gonna be painful.
Bring to the navel(?j1) like I'm going through labour.
Many men hate you, many more underrate you.
Get ready for betrayal, unfaithful niggers lay low.
Uh, you know the Universe only rewards the faithful.
Father forgive them they 'on't know what they do. Uh,
now check it:

.......
uh, now look what loving made you do
uhh, you're running when no one's chasing you
ah, I don't care if they love me (fuck it!)
above me only God can judge me.

uh, now look what loving made you do
uhh, you're running but no one's chasing you
ah, I don't care if they love me (fuck it!)
above me only God can judge me.

2

Late in December, I received a letter.
No signature or sender. I had the shit rendered,
turned out it was never no previous offender.
Marked up my calendar. Enter: forever.
We enter, time turns Spring into Winter.
It follows the Summer will Fall in the center.
Words from the letter, written to remember.
I'm a fucking avenger. The pen is my temper.
I'll send you a helper, my flow healed a leper,
MCs will remember me as the Elder
Idris Elba, Real Professor Peller
I don't need no umbrella I'm fly with my propellers.
When fear enter, the verbal airbender
break your agenda take no surrender,
you're getting dismembered, blended, get-
-ting reassembled, yes, with the emblem on the single.
The flow was peddled like gold medals
on all levels, same goes for all devils.
Soul rebels, when I flow the soul trembles.
Angels on chariots riding on gold pedals.

Chorus/Hook
+ Above me only God can judge me.

Ghost (SDC):

3

I'm not looking for acknowledgements, just give me knowledge trick,
see I got knowledge to self, so I know I'm the shit.
Room's full of smoke cos a product of my environment.
Now I'm feeling like Superman up in this Metropolis.
Making you Lex Luthor... my solar opposite.
Fuck, boys, you didn't know that there's no stopping this.

It's in God's hands so can't be deterred,
these words are Spurs and I'm Greg Popovich.
Truth, Nigger! Swallow it. This here is knocking, menn, what a dope beat
to put me in the zone, I got too much heat to get cold feet.
Too much heart to bypass, not enough time to waste,
so I'm here paying my dues cos it costs a lot to be great.
If you're still sleeping on us then you're two thousand and late,
for those who've been awake, welcome back to the future.

You couldn't stop my rise if you had the eyes of Medusa.
No statute of limitation can stop us from going nuclear.
Caught wind of the rumours - they're saying we must have fell off,
or went the pop route, financially we're not well-off.

I started doing this cos I thought we were being rep'd wrong.
Gandhi said be the change you desire if you expect more.
So I got to stepping, bench-pressing these bars.
You see the muscle I'm flexing? Got too much hustle to sell 'em.
uh, SDC - Jag Nation, Man, what a pairing!
Just like parents we're son-ning these niggers!
See, I'm made in the image of God so, with disrespectful intent,
fuck you, when you think you can judge me nigga.

Chorus/Hook

Tec (SDC):

4

Uh,
Yeah,
shhhhh,
Kneel to no man cos only heaven's above me,
Call us Rap Messiah so I wonder where the love be
And if they will remain if the shit starts getting ugly.
Will Babylon corrupt me? Guy trust me, they're trying.
All the fake smiles, the schemes, the lying.
The ways of the sheep can never make sense to the lion
so there's no point in replying. I'm just killing them with silence.
Uh, the revolution has begun.
I'm feeling like the chosen thinking maybe I'm The One.
I'm feeling like Gowon the second that he picked that gun.
Guy, there's power in my hands I wonder what I will become.
Huh, when there's no place to run.
I'm bound to feel the heat I'm flying closer to the sun.
Will I hold on to power or, maybe I will run, or
shey I'll plant the seeds for the future ones to come.
This dictator rap guy, ki lo de t'en rap bayi?
My penmanship is supreme it shall never capsize.
Yeah. It shall never capsize.
I don't spit on the mic, my guy, I baptize. And that's life.

THE END.
